President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, to The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts. This decision coincides with the celebration of Soyinka’s 90th birthday on July 13, 2024.
Wole Soyinka, a distinguished playwright, novelist, poet, essayist, actor, singer, composer, and documentarian, is renowned globally for his contributions to literature and his advocacy for good governance and social justice. In 1986, he became the first African to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. His accolades also include the Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature, the Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Europe Theatre Prize – Special Prize.
In a statement by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised Soyinka as one of the finest minds of his generation, embodying the highest standards of human enlightenment while remaining steadfast against injustice, oppression, and base impulses.
President Tinubu described Soyinka as one of Nigeria’s living repositories of history, knowledge, and courage. He commended Soyinka for his decades-long efforts as a pro-democracy advocate and a vocal opponent of corruption and maladministration.
“I am, accordingly, delighted to have the honor to announce the decision of the Federal Government to rename the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, as The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts,” President Tinubu stated.
