The Secretary to the Government of Jigawa State, Malam Bala Ibrahim, recently inaugurated peace and reconciliation committees in the Janwawa and Bagadaza communities in Birnin Kudu and Gwaram Local Government Areas.
This initiative aims to promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in those areas and address the ongoing crisis between the two groups.
During the inauguration ceremony, the SSG emphasized the state government’s commitment to fostering peace and stability among its citizens.
The committees have been given specific terms of reference, including ensuring fairness and justice in farmland allocation, demarcating stock routes, and establishing grazing reserves.
Additionally, the committees will engage in educating farmers and herders on their respective roles in society and promoting harmonious relationships between them.
One of the key responsibilities of these committees is to facilitate amicable resolutions to disputes that may arise between farmers and herders.
They will also work to prevent farmers from encroaching on tracks leading to important water sources used for livestock watering. The committees are expected to play a crucial role in mitigating conflicts and maintaining peace in the region.
In response to their appointment, the Chairman of the Janwawa Committee and the Bagadaza Committee expressed gratitude and pledged to work diligently to fulfill their duties.
The composition of the committees includes a diverse range of stakeholders, including community leaders, security officials, and representatives of farmers and herders, reflecting a comprehensive approach to addressing the underlying issues causing tension between the two groups.
