Team Nigeria Set to Compete in 12 Events at 2024 Olympics

The federal government has approved the budget for Team Nigeria ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

This was announced by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, on Sunday at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, during the handing over ceremony of Team Nigeria to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), led by Habu Gumel.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister urged the nation’s athletes to strive for podium finishes in their respective events, assuring them of sufficient funding and comprehensive welfare.

“The budget submitted has been fully approved by the President, so we have no excuse and must reciprocate with medals,” Senator Enoh stated.

While handing over the team, Senator Enoh encouraged them to compete cleanly and aim to surpass their performance from the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

Receiving the athletes, who wore green and white tracksuits designed by a Chinese company, NOC President Habu Gumel promised that the athletes and officials would represent Nigeria honorably in Paris.

Jean Francois Hasperie, the French chargé d’affaires in Nigeria, wished the team success and assured them of France’s hospitality during the games.

The ceremony featured the unveiling of Team Nigeria’s kits and a parade of some athletes, including long jumper Ese Brume, canoeist Ayomide Bello, weightlifter Rafiat Lawal, and high jumper Amon Abraham (Men’s T-44).

Ajayi Kanyisola Ismail, a sprinter competing in the 100m and 4x100m events, expressed confidence in winning a medal. Another athlete, Ayomide Bello, stated she was ready to make her nation proud and would compete to the best of her abilities.

The Nigerian flag was also handed over to the NOC during the ceremony.

A total of 87 athletes will represent Nigeria in 12 events: swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting, wrestling, athletics, badminton, boxing, canoeing, cycling, women’s basketball, and women’s football.

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games will commence on July 26.
