The African Diaspora Union (AFRIDU) has urged President Bola Tinubu to grant a citizenship waiver for African descendants of Trans Atlantic Slave Trade victims as part of reparative justice.
Professor Chidiebere Anelechi Ogbu, President of AFRIDU, made the appeal during a strategic meeting in Abuja with the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). He explained that AFRIDU aims to address the long-standing struggles of Africans in the diaspora and seek reparative justice for those affected by the slave trade through conspiracy, kidnapping, and coercion.
“This is an opportunity for President Tinubu to make history and be recognized globally for using his presidential authority to grant citizenship waivers to African descendants who trace their ancestry to Nigeria,” Ogbu stated.
In response, NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa noted that the issue of citizenship rights for African descendants involves the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN). She explained that NiDCOM, in collaboration with AFRIDU and the Ministry of Interior, will explore possible options, but ultimately, the Nigerian parliament has the final say on constitutional matters such as this.
The collaborative effort aims to find a pathway to address the citizenship concerns of African descendants seeking recognition and restoration of their rights in Nigeria.
