Jude Bellingham has been cleared to play in England’s Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday after receiving a one-match suspended ban and a fine for a gesture made during the last-16 victory over Slovakia.
The 21-year-old midfielder’s ban is suspended for a year, and he has been fined £25,400 (30,000 euros).
UEFA investigated Bellingham’s crotch-grabbing gesture directed at the Slovakian bench following his late equaliser in the 2-1 win. Bellingham, who has made the gesture while playing for Real Madrid, denied it was aimed at Slovakia.
On social media, Bellingham explained that the gesture was an inside joke directed at close friends present at the game, emphasizing his respect for Slovakia’s performance.
Bellingham has started all four of England’s Euro 2024 matches, contributing two goals, including the 95th-minute overhead kick equaliser against Slovakia.
All 26 players in Gareth Southgate’s squad participated in Friday morning’s training session.
Meanwhile, the Football Association has been fined £9,310 (11,000 euros) for crowd disturbances involving England supporters. A 10,000-euro fine was issued for crowd issues and 1,000 euros for lighting fireworks.
While Bellingham will play on Saturday, Turkey defender Merih Demiral has received a two-match ban for a gesture made during Turkey’s last-16 win against Austria.
Demiral, 26, scored both goals in Turkey’s 2-1 win and celebrated his second goal with a ‘wolf salute’, a gesture linked to the far-right Grey Wolves group, which is banned in Austria and France.
Turkey will face the Netherlands in Berlin, with the match kicking off at 20:00.
