Gunmen in Benue kill six people and set buildings on fire.

A tragic incident occurred in Benue State as suspected armed militias carried out violent attacks on the communities of Ayati and Borikyo in the Ukum Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that six residents lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries during the assault. The armed militia reportedly targeted the community indiscriminately, resulting in the loss of lives and the destruction of public properties, including the Ukum Local Government Secretariat.

The brutality of the attack led many residents to flee for safety, while others unfortunate enough to remain in the vicinity fell victim to gunfire. Additionally, properties belonging to notable individuals in the area, such as the residence of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Paul Biam, were set ablaze during the onslaught. The violent incident prompted residents to come together in a mass protest, blocking the Sankera-Ayati-Sai Road in defiance of the repeated invasions by bandits.

In response to the attacks, law enforcement officers, led by the state Police Public Relations Officer, engaged the assailants and managed to repel them. However, the devastating consequences of the assault left a significant impact on the community, including the destruction of the Ukum Local Government Area office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Amidst the chaos and grief, calls for justice and accountability have emerged, with the senator representing Benue North-East, Emmanuel Udende, condemning the senseless violence and urging security agencies to swiftly identify and prosecute those responsible for the tragic loss of lives.
