Nigeria’s electricity generation has experienced a decline, with the latest data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s National Control Centre indicating a peak generation of 4,723.30 megawatts on July 4, 2024.
This represents a drop from the peak of 4,800 megawatts that was recorded on May 3, 2024. The lowest electricity generation during this period was reported at 3,610.08 megawatts.
Despite substantial post-privatization investments totaling over N7 trillion in the power sector, Nigeria’s electricity generation has not surpassed 5,000 megawatts for a population estimated to be over 200 million people.
The decline in electricity generation comes at a time when the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced in May that the country had achieved a peak generation of 5,000 megawatts with the addition of 625 megawatts from the Zungeru Hydro Plant.
The recent data showing a decrease in electricity generation to 4,723.30 megawatts suggests that Nigeria is facing challenges in meeting its electricity needs.
This decline raises concerns, especially in light of the Minister’s pledge to achieve a target of 6,000 megawatts of electricity generation by the end of 2024.
