The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed that two individuals have died and three houses were burnt during a clash between farmers and herders in Brinin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident took place on Tuesday, with the clash allegedly instigated by suspected cattle herders from Katsina State who were reportedly invited by local herders to destroy farmlands in Safa and Gaurakai villages in the area. Lawan Shiisu, the spokesman of the Jigawa State Police Command, provided details of the incident in a statement issued in Dutse, the state capital.
According to Shiisu, the command received reports that herders from Katsina State, accompanied by a large number of cattle, were heading towards Safa and Gauraki villages at around 4:00 pm on Tuesday and causing destruction to farmlands along the way.
Upon receiving the information, the Area Commander of Birnin Kudu Area Command mobilized patrol teams, along with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and the Vigilance Group of Nigeria (VGN), to respond to the situation.
Farmers in the affected communities reportedly gathered in large numbers to protect their farmlands before the security team arrived. Unfortunately, a violent confrontation ensued between the parties before the security team managed to intervene and disperse them.
The clash resulted in the deaths of two individuals, and three houses belonging to local herders were set ablaze, with 15 cattle left abandoned.
