The Lagos State Government has announced its collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat a cholera outbreak at the Kirikiri Medium Security Prison.
In a statement on Sunday, the State’s Director of Public Affairs, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, quoted Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi, revealing that 25 severe gastroenteritis cases linked to cholera had been reported at the prison. Abayomi detailed the urgent medical and environmental measures taken, which included supplying intravenous fluids, infection prevention materials, and health consumables to the prison. WHO also contributed 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals to aid prevention efforts for the prison’s 3,200 inmates. Immediate water and sanitation issues were addressed, and inspections are ongoing in other correctional facilities.
The Lagos State Government reported a significant reduction in daily cholera cases since the initial outbreak spike two weeks ago, though low-level community transmission persists. Following a recent “One Health” intergovernmental meeting, Abayomi confirmed no new cholera-related deaths in the last 72 hours and highlighted continued interventions to eliminate transmission. He traced the outbreak’s source to unregulated street beverages and contaminated water, with samples revealing the presence of vibrio cholera bacteria. The state is enforcing stricter regulations on local beverage manufacturers and enhancing sanitation measures to curb food and water-borne diseases. Treatment for suspected cholera cases remains free in all government hospitals.
