On Thursday, the Senate extended the implementation of the 2023 supplementary budget from June 30 to December 31, 2024.
In a swift move, the upper chamber suspended its rules and passed the extension bill in a matter of minutes.
Prior to passing the bill, the Senate held a closed-door session for two hours.
In December 2023, both chambers of the National Assembly had extended the capital component of the budget’s implementation period from December 31, 2023, to March 31, 2024, along with the N2.17 trillion 2023 supplementary budget passed in November 2023.
Responding to President Bola Tinubu’s request in March, both the Senate and the House of Representatives further extended the budgetary appropriations’ implementation period from March 31, 2024, to June 30, 2024.
With the June 30, 2024, deadline for the 2023 budgetary appropriations approaching, the two chambers interrupted their recess to hold separate sessions to consider the extension before their scheduled resumption on July 2, 2024.
