The Federal Government of Nigeria has entered into an agreement with the Foundation for Sustainable Social Responsibility in Emerging Africa (FOSSREA) to advance the development of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
In a statement, Mrs. Oluwakemi Ogunmakinwa, Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, announced that the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Nicholas Agbo Ella, described the agreement as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to hydrogen energy, which he termed the fuel of the future.
Ambassador Ella noted that his discussions with the German Embassy revealed significant advancements in hydrogen production and highlighted the importance of having a partner like FOSSREA to foster hydrogen development in Nigeria.
Ella emphasized the critical need to collaborate with FOSSREA on hydrogen initiatives. He mentioned that the Ministry, through a Local Organising Committee (LOC), would work closely with FOSSREA to conduct research, harmonize efforts, and exchange ideas beneficial to Nigeria. “Hydrogen is revolutionizing activities globally, and Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind,” he added.
Mr. Aliu Hydar Mijinyawa, Chairman of FOSSREA, pointed out that hydrogen is emerging as a key global fuel. He noted that several African countries are already ahead in deploying hydrogen technologies and attracting substantial investments.
He urged Nigeria to capitalize on the hydrogen economy and prioritize it as a critical national project. Mijinyawa affirmed that experts from within and outside Nigeria would be consulted to share their knowledge and brainstorm on establishing a robust hydrogen foundation in the country.
