FAAN Assures Travelers of Enhanced Airport Security

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel, known as the Special Force, will now be armed at the nation’s airports to enhance security in accordance with international standards.

FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku made this announcement during the official opening of the international wing of Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos. She assured travelers that the Special Forces have received extensive training to perform their duties effectively and will adhere to strict protocols to avoid excessive use of force.

Mrs. Kuku emphasized that the Special Force would be deployed to the five major airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. She highlighted the importance of their collaboration with other security agencies to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated security approach at these airports.

“The presence of armed AVSEC personnel will help curb illegal activities. Use of force will be a last resort and will be coordinated with other security agencies if necessary,” Mrs. Kuku stated. She also urged passengers and airport users to maintain orderly conduct to facilitate smooth operations.

Addressing potential security threats, Mrs. Kuku remarked, “We encounter various unscrupulous elements attempting to disrupt airport security. Our goal is to prevent such incidents without resorting to force. It is crucial for everyone working within our airport community to behave in a manner that ensures the safety and comfort of our passengers.”

In a related incident disclosed at the event, Mrs. Kuku reported that a middle-aged man was electrocuted while attempting to steal electrical cables and other equipment from the powerhouse at Lagos airport. The man, whose identity remains unknown, had accessed the power generating building and was disconnecting installations when the incident occurred.

Mrs. Kuku reaffirmed FAAN’s commitment to addressing all security vulnerabilities and preventing unauthorized access to airport facilities.
