The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced that holders of Higher National Diplomas (HND) can now be employed as lecturers in Nigerian polytechnics under a newly approved scheme of service.
During the formal presentation of the new Schemes of Service to polytechnic stakeholders in Kaduna, NBTE Executive Secretary, Professor Idris Bugaje, stated that HND holders with good grades will be eligible for academic staff positions, starting as Graduate Assistants, similar to their degree-holding counterparts.
“This significant achievement was made possible by Dr. Mrs. Folasade Yemi-Esan, CFR, the Head of Service of the Federation, whose unwavering support for the polytechnic sector has been instrumental,” Professor Bugaje remarked. “We are immensely grateful for her efforts that have led to today’s celebration.”
Under the new scheme, the Instructor cadre, which previously represented a segregation against HND holders, has been abolished. The Technician cadre has been integrated into the Technologist cadre, enabling ND holders to be appointed as Assistant Technologists. The Pharmacy Technology cadre remains intact, ensuring that HND holders in this field, who may face restrictions from the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria in hospital employment, still have their roles secured in public service.
Professor Bugaje highlighted that the new Schemes of Service, effective from June 7, 2024, introduce a unified approach to the recruitment and promotion of staff across federal, state, and private polytechnics in Nigeria.
He acknowledged that this milestone is the result of over a decade of efforts and advocacy by staff unions, polytechnic rectors through their COHEADS/COFER bodies, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the NBTE.
