The Nigerian police thwarted a bank robbery at First Bank in Abaji, Abuja on Thursday, killing three robbers during a fierce gun battle.
The attempted robbery involved a 15-man gang and was foiled by the combined efforts of the Nigerian Police and the military.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the police received a distress call around 5:00 PM. This prompt alert enabled the FCT police, led by Commissioner of Police CP Benneth Igweh, to collaborate with military forces and repel the attack.
The statement detailed how security forces engaged the robbers in an intense gunfight, resulting in the apprehension of three suspects: Usman, identified as the gang leader, Nuhu Musa, 41, and Muhammed Aminu, 25, all of whom sustained various degrees of bullet injuries.
During the confrontation, a police operative and the gang leader were hit by bullets. They were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead by the attending doctor. Other injured suspects are currently receiving medical treatment.
CP Igweh reaffirmed the command’s dedication to ensuring the safety of residents in the FCT.
