Suspect Arrested in Southern France for Plotting Attack on Olympic Venue

A man was arrested in Southern France for allegedly planning an attack on a football stadium to be used in the upcoming Olympic Games.

On May 22, authorities detained the suspect in Saint-Etienne after uncovering evidence suggesting an Islamist-inspired attack.

Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin lauded the intelligence agencies for their successful interception of the potential threat to the Games.

France remains on high alert as it prepares for the Olympics, set to commence on July 26.

The arrest followed the suspect’s encrypted communications with known terrorists and the discovery of photographs and videos of the stadium on his electronic devices.

The Paris 2024 organizing committee expressed appreciation for the swift and effective efforts of French authorities in safeguarding the Games’ security.
