The Disability Not a Barrier Initiative (DINABI) has called for an end to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) against women and girls with disabilities, urging community action.
This call was made during a one-day training workshop sponsored by the Disability Rights Fund (DRF) in Ado-Ekiti. The Executive Director of DINABI in Ekiti State, Mr. Olajide Funso, emphasized the importance of empowering women and girls with disabilities to know how to seek help and report incidents of violence.
He also urged the government to include persons with disabilities in decision-making bodies and provide necessary support services like sign language interpreters. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Adetoun Agboola, announced plans to build a facility for individuals with serious disabilities in Ado-Ekiti. The Deputy Superintendent of Corps for Persons with Disabilities of the NSCDC, Mrs. Adejuwon Yemisi, pledged support for DINABI’s initiative and encouraged victims to come forward and speak out.
Additionally, various stakeholders including the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Ekiti State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) expressed their support for DINABI’s efforts to combat gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities.
