12 opposition parties have indicated interest in participating in the local government elections in Ebonyi State.
The opposition parties expressed their readiness for the council polls scheduled for July 20, 2024, and will be challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The Special Assistant to Governor Francis Nwifuru on Inter-Party Affairs, Comrade Sunday Nwambam, made this known during an interaction with journalists in Abakaliki on Saturday. Nwambam highlighted that the interest shown by the opposition parties in the grassroots elections reflects the inclusiveness promoted by the Nwifuru-led administration.
He confirmed that parties such as the Action Alliance (AA), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Young Progressives Party (YPP), among others, have initiated the electoral processes to field candidates for the election. Nwambam praised the administration for providing a level playing field for all political parties to engage in their activities in the state, emphasizing that the participation of opposition parties is a positive sign for democracy.
Besides the ruling APC, a total of 12 political parties have signaled their interest in the local government elections in Ebonyi State. Nwambam encouraged opposition parties to adhere to election guidelines and assured them of a fair electoral process. Since assuming office in March 2024, he has focused on uniting members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state, leading to a successful IPAC election and fostering peace and unity among party members. Nwambam’s efforts have resulted in the reconciliation of factions within the council and improved relations between Ebonyi IPAC members and the national leadership.
