Tanker catches fire and explodes on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

A gas-laden Iveco truck burst into flames on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Saturday. The truck, without any identifying number, collided at approximately 6:57 a.m. in the vicinity of Ago Igbala, Ibafo area aspect of the roadway.

The accident reportedly resulted in a traffic jam between the scene and Arepo on the outbound Lagos sector of the highway.

Confirming the occurrence, the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Division, Florence Okpe, attributed the crash to reckless driving and lack of control by the tanker operator.

Okpe stated that the incident involved five male adults and there were no fatalities or injuries. She remarked, “The incident transpired at 06:57 a.m. this morning on Lagos-Ibadan expressway around Ago Igbala, Ibafo area in Ogun State.

A total of 05 people were involved, all male adults, and fortunately there were no deaths or injuries. The vehicle involved was an Iveco truck without a license plate. The presumed cause of the single-vehicle crash was speed, and the vehicle lost control and collided.

The tanker was transporting fuel, and no fatalities were reported.” Okpe indicated that a search-and-rescue effort has been launched, although traffic controllers are still handling the congestion due to the accident.
