The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Kano zone has urged the Federal Government to address the outstanding issues in the agreements and memoranda it signed with the union to ensure industrial harmony in Nigeria.
The Zonal Coordinator, Abdulqadir Muhammad, emphasized the need for the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, funding for the revitalization of public universities, respect for university autonomy, and other critical issues.
According to Muhammad, the failure to sign the renegotiated agreement has resulted in widespread discontent and decreased morale among ASUU members, leading to brain drain in the academic sector. He called on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to uphold the provisions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) convention, to which Nigeria is a signatory.
Additionally, ASUU Kano zone demanded the release of funds for the settlement of salary arrears, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and withheld salaries.
Regarding university autonomy, the union urged the Kano State Government to reinstate the governing councils of the two state-owned universities that were arbitrarily dissolved.
Furthermore, ASUU Kano zone called on state governments to follow the presidential directive to exclude tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and halt the unauthorized enrollment of their members in similar platforms.
