NFVCB Urges Nollywood to Avoid Depicting Smoking, Money Rituals

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has called on Nollywood stakeholders to ensure that films and music videos do not depict or glorify harmful substances like tobacco smoking, criminal acts, ritual killings, and money rituals.

During the National Stakeholders’ Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood in Enugu, NFVCB Executive Director Dr. Shaibu Husseini stressed the need for responsible content creation due to the industry’s significant influence on the entertainment and creative sectors.

He commended Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) for organizing the event, noting it as a crucial corporate social responsibility initiative within Nigeria’s creative industry.

Dr. Husseini highlighted that the industry is facing a crisis that demands collective action from all stakeholders to address the proliferation of unapproved and unclassified content. He urged both public and private sector stakeholders to collaborate and mobilize resources to educate and sensitize the public, particularly youth and mothers, about the dangers of harmful content.

CAPPA Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi echoed the call for a smoke-free Nollywood, pointing out that smoking remains prevalent in Nigerian movies despite existing laws prohibiting tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorships in entertainment. He underscored the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle and curbing the global spread of smoking.
