The federal government has emphasized the crucial role of sports in fostering national unity and social integration in Nigeria. Mrs. Atinuke Watti, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, highlighted this perspective at the opening of the 1st National Council on Sports technical conference in Enugu yesterday.
Under the theme “Sports for National Unity and Socio-Economic Development,” the conference underscores the power of sports to bridge the divides of language, ethnicity, and religion, uniting people through competition, achievement, and collective pride. “In every corner of our country, from the cities to the towns and villages, sports bring us together, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose,” Watti stated. She added that sports provide a platform to celebrate diversity and find strength in unity.
Watti also emphasized the values instilled through sports, such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance, which are essential for building strong communities and a resilient nation.
Opening the conference, Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, represented by Lloyd Ekweremmadu, the State’s Commissioner for Youths and Sports, reiterated the role of sports as a catalyst for social cohesion, economic development, and youth empowerment. He expressed optimism that the technical sessions would pave the way for transformative policies and innovative programs impacting the youth.
“Let us leverage our collective expertise to address the challenges facing our sports sector and explore innovative solutions that will propel us to greater heights,” Ossai urged. He called for focused attention on critical areas such as infrastructure development, athlete welfare, funding mechanisms, coaching standards, and grassroots sports programs.
