The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos State Chapter will begin picketing Turkish Airlines in Lagos starting Tuesday. This action is a response to the airline’s alleged unfair treatment of its employees.
The NLC demands the reinstatement of all Turkish Airlines staff who were dismissed, forced to resign, or left their jobs under duress, including those who were penalized for their union activities in 2020. The union insists that these employees be returned to their positions without any loss of benefits.
Comrade Chris Uyot, the Acting General Secretary of NLC Lagos State Chapter, condemned the airline for dismissing seven of eleven National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) members without benefits. Uyot claims the dismissals were based on unfounded charges and carried out by a disciplinary committee that did not follow the negotiated Conditions of Service with NUATE.
“The management of Turkish Airlines has unjustly dismissed workers, wasting ten to fourteen years of their service solely because they exercised their constitutional right to unionize. This situation is intolerable to Congress,” Uyot stated.
The NLC also criticized plans to terminate the remaining four union members to hire new staff who would be prohibited from joining the union or be replaced by a general sales agent.
All aviation affiliate unions have been instructed to mobilize for the picketing, with the FCT Council on standby to escalate the protest to Abuja airport if necessary.
