Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has called on Senegal’s new President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, to use his influence within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to resolve ongoing conflicts with Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.
President Faye, at 44 Senegal’s youngest-ever president, arrived in Accra on Friday after a meeting with Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu.
In January 2024, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS following their suspensions due to military coups.
President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism about President Faye’s commitment to addressing the issue, stating, “We are fortunate to have a new leader willing to help tackle the significant challenge facing the ECOWAS community.”
President Faye has shown dedication to ECOWAS’s efforts to engage the three countries in dialogue and reintegrate them into the bloc. His election has sparked hopes for change, particularly in contrast to the continent’s long-serving leaders and military regimes.
The new Senegalese leader accepted the challenge of reconciling ECOWAS with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, emphasizing the importance of regional unity.
“ECOWAS is facing difficult times, but we will work to consolidate the gains made in integration with a spirit of common solidarity,” Faye said.
Earlier in Nigeria, President Faye expressed his intention, alongside Nigeria, which currently chairs ECOWAS, to persuade the three countries to rejoin the bloc and uphold democratic values.
