Federal Government, 32 States Form Committee to Address Mining Issues

The Federal Government and governors from 32 states have agreed to establish a joint committee to address ongoing issues in the mining sector nationwide.

This decision emerged from a significant meeting between the Nigerian Governors Forum, led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake.

The initiative represents a move towards cooperative federalism in addressing mining sector challenges.

Dr. Alake highlighted the federal government’s dedication to collaborating with states to enhance mining sector policies and procedures.

“Our aim is to operate transparently within the constitutional framework, ensuring no perception of discord between federal and state authorities,” Alake stated.

He emphasized that solid minerals are constitutionally under the exclusive legislative list, requiring states to obtain ministry approval before implementing mining-related policies.

The Minister also praised states that have complied with the federal directive to apply for mining licenses.

“Several states have submitted applications, which we have promptly approved, fostering their active participation and ensuring they benefit from national resources,” he noted.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun stressed the importance of collaborative frameworks allowing state involvement in the licensing process.

“It is crucial that we have a role in how mining licenses are issued, addressing our specific interests and environmental concerns,” Governor Abiodun said.

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and Niger State Governor Hon. Umar Bago echoed the need for tailored consultations to address unique regional challenges within the mining sector.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous resolution to enhance cooperation, aiming to reform the mining sector and boost its contribution to Nigeria’s GDP and national revenue.
