9 Killed, 4 Injured in Jigawa Villagers and Herders Clash

JIGAWA, NIGERIANine people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries following a violent clash between villagers and herders in Miga and Jahun local government areas of Jigawa State.

 

The incident occurred on Friday when residents of Gululu village in Miga LGA discovered a burglary at a local shop. Suspecting herders as the culprits, they traced footprints to a Fulani settlement in Yankunama village, Jahun LGA.

 

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the villagers were met with resistance upon arrival at the Fulani camp. The herders allegedly attacked with bows and arrows, injuring four villagers. In retaliation, the villagers launched a counterattack, leading to the escalation of violence. Several Fulani homes were reportedly set ablaze during the conflict.

 

The fatalities, numbering nine, were recovered and taken to hospitals in Jahun and Miga, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths.

 

In response, the Jigawa State Police Command dispatched officers to the scene to restore order. The Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, accompanied by senior officials, also visited the affected areas for on-the-ground assessment.

 

A peace meeting was convened afterward, involving top government officials, traditional rulers, and representatives from the herders’ association, Miyetti Allah. The stakeholders emphasized the need for calm and pledged efforts to prevent further violence.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, with patrols intensified in the affected areas to maintain peace. SP Lawan assured that those responsible for the violence would be brought to justice, adding that measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence.

 

Although the situation is under control, tension remains high in the region.
