Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested an 80-year-old man, identified as Pa. Stephen, for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl in the Otuokpoti community, Ogbia Local Government Area.
The Dise Ogbise Foundation, an advocacy group, and local residents described Pa. Stephen as a serial paedophile. The suspect, reportedly suffering from advanced piles and hernia, was taken to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ogbia Town following the advocacy group’s insistence.
According to a statement from the advocacy group, the victim’s foster mother noticed the girl showing signs of illness and distraction while performing chores. It was revealed that the suspect had been abusing the minor for about a year before neighbors informed the foster mother that they had seen him giving money to the young girl.
The statement detailed, “Many neighbors warned the foster mother about the elderly accused giving money to the child and cautioned her to be vigilant. They alerted her to the suspect’s history as a serial paedophile.”
On the day of the arrest, a concerned community member saw the child entering Pa. Stephen’s house after school and raised the alarm. The community intervened and rescued the girl, who admitted that the abuse had been ongoing since the previous year.
Dise Harry, founder of the Dise Ogbise Foundation, informed reporters that the arrest was a collective effort of various gender advocacy groups. The Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Bayelsa State Chapter, provided medical support and examinations for the victim, who will also undergo psychological assessment.
The victim has been placed in protective custody under the Bayelsa State Government through the Ministry of Women Affairs. Harry remarked, “It is sad that such incidents occur. It is a red flag to all of us.”
As of the time of reporting, Police Public Relations Officer Musa Mohammed had not yet commented on the incident.
