8-Year-Old Girl Escapes From Abductors in Akwa Ibom State

Akwa Ibom, NigeriaAn 8-year-old pupil of Government Primary School, Ikot Uboh, Abasiofon Udeme Udoekpo, narrowly escaped an attempted abduction in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, near Ikot Ibritam Junction in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

 

The child, who was reportedly in the care of an unidentified woman at the time, raised an alarm during the kidnap attempt, attracting the attention of passersby. She was subsequently rescued by concerned community members.

According to a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Chairman of Oruk Anam LGA, Mercy Udoh Edidiong, the victim was taken to the council secretariat and presented to the Chairman, Rt. Hon. Sunday Festus, before being handed over to the police for investigation and proper care.

“We wish to inform the public that Miss Abasiofon Udeme Udoekpo, a young girl, narrowly escaped an attempted child trafficking incident near Ikot Ibritam Junction,” the statement read.

Edidiong noted that the girl was able to identify her parents as Mrs. Glory Udoekpo, who had placed her in domestic service, and Mr. Monday Tom.

Following her rescue, she was transferred to the Police Divisional Headquarters in Ikot Okoro. Meanwhile, operatives from the Oruk Anam Division of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have launched a manhunt for the suspected abductors.

The council chairman, Rt. Hon. Festus, called on residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that child protection is a shared societal duty.
