At least 50 bodies have been recovered following two catastrophic landslides in southern Ethiopia, according to local officials.
The landslides struck the Gofa district in the South Ethiopia regional state after heavy rainfall on Sunday night.
Rescue efforts took a tragic turn when a second landslide hit on Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of local residents, police, and rescue workers who were searching for survivors. Victims include women, children, and police officers, as confirmed by Meskir Mitku, the district’s general administrator.
Photos shared by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) depict numerous individuals combing the barren hillside for victims.
The disaster has left the community in shock, with many still searching for their loved ones.
The region has a history of such tragedies, with at least 32 people killed in 2018 due to two separate landslides occurring within the same week.
