Plateau state, Nigeria: At least 40 people have been killed in an attack on the Zike community in Plateau State’s Bassa Local Government Area. Gunmen launched the assault in the early hours of the day, sparking sporadic shootings that left residents fleeing for their lives.
Local vigilantes intervened and repelled the attackers, but not before 36 people had been killed, with four others succumbing to injuries later.
The incident is the latest in a string of violent attacks in Plateau State, with 52 people killed in Bokkos Local Government Area just two weeks ago. President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to apprehend those behind the violence, reaffirming his government’s commitment to eradicating violent crimes.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has protested the continuous killings in Plateau State and other parts of the country, calling for urgent action to address the crisis. The latest attack has reignited concerns about the security situation in the state and the need for effective measures to prevent further bloodshed.
