At least 35 people are missing following a boat collision on the Gummi River in Zamfara State. The incident occurred when two boats, one carrying over 40 passengers—primarily farmers en route to their fields—collided, causing one of the vessels to capsize.
Bello Abubakar, Vice Chairman of the Zamfara State Boat Operators Association, revealed that the boat was dangerously overloaded, despite prior warnings. “The driver had been cautioned about the excessive load, but the passengers refused to disembark,” Abubakar explained.
The collision happened after one of the boats encountered mechanical problems, and another vessel attempted to assist, leading to the crash. So far, only seven passengers have been rescued, leaving 35 still unaccounted for.
Eyewitnesses, including Zayyanu Aliyu, confirmed that the boat was overcrowded with men, women, and children, despite warnings to reduce the number of passengers. Survivor Murtala Sa’idu recounted his ordeal, stating, “I was fortunate to be saved, but over 30 others are still missing.”
Search and rescue operations are ongoing as teams comb the river for survivors. There has been no official response from government authorities yet, while families anxiously await updates on their missing loved ones.
