3 Killed, Others Injured in Gunmen Attack on Ebonyi Community

Unidentified gunmen attacked the Akpoha community in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State late Saturday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals.

During the attack, which occurred late Saturday night, numerous residents sustained various injuries while fleeing for safety.

Among the victims were a member of the State Neighborhood Security Watch (NSW), a female trader, and a man near the vigilante member who was killed, according to sources.

Local resident Uche Donatus confirmed the incident, noting that the NSW operative was hit by about 10 bullets. “It was a heavy attack. I had to run out of my house because the bullets were hitting my roof,” Donatus said. “After they left, three bodies were on the ground: an NSW member with multiple gunshot wounds, and two other residents, Emmanuel Nwacha, Egwu Nicholas Nwacha, and Inya Blessing Orieona.”

Donatus highlighted that such attacks have become frequent in Akpoha, with little being done to address the violence. “Emmanuel Nwacha was the leader of the Neighborhood Security Watch and the Chief Security Officer for the company constructing a new bridge in the community,” he added.

Police collected numerous bullets from the scene and evacuated the bodies. Kenneth Orji Obasi, the Coordinator of Akpoha Development Center, also confirmed the incident, stating, “The bodies of the victims have been taken to the morgue. I received a call about the gunfire around 8 PM and sent members of the NSW to the scene.”

The State’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, reported that he had not yet received any information on the incident.
