Gombe – A 27-year-old man, Mohammed Bello, who attempted suicide by climbing a telecommunication mast, has been rescued by the Gombe State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, disclosed in a statement on Monday, March 10, 2025, that the man claimed he was being hunted by security agencies over outstanding debts.
According to the statement, the police received a distress call on March 8, 2025, about an unidentified man who had climbed an MTN mast on Maimala Buni Street, Gombe LGA, and refused to come down.
Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Pantami Division mobilized officers to the scene.
During interrogation, Bello revealed that he was being pursued by security agencies due to unpaid debts reported by two creditors. Feeling overwhelmed, he preferred to end his life rather than face the situation.
The police later confirmed Bello’s identity as a resident of Jekadafari Quarters, Gombe.
With the intervention of Katukan Gombe, a respected community leader, Bello was persuaded to come down safely after assurances that his debts would be settled.
After descending, he was taken into police custody, where his statement was recorded under caution.
The Gombe State Police Command commended the swift response of its officers and the intervention of community stakeholders in resolving the situation peacefully.
The command urged the public to seek lawful and constructive solutions to financial challenges, emphasizing that help is always available.
