22 Kano Athletes Die in Road Accident—Speaker Abbas Mourns

Abuja, Nigeria — The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of 22 athletes from Kano State who perished in a road accident along the Zaria-Kano Expressway on Saturday.

The athletes were returning from the National Sports Festival recently held in Ogun State when their vehicle plunged into a river, resulting in the loss of 22 lives and injuring several others.

In a statement issued by the Speaker’s Media Office in Abuja, Hon. Abbas described the incident as a national tragedy, offering prayers for the souls of the deceased and a speedy recovery for the injured.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and the Kano State Government during this moment of immense grief,” the Speaker stated. “This is a heartbreaking loss. May Allah grant their families the strength to bear these irreparable losses.”

He called on the Kano State Government and relevant authorities to take proactive steps to prevent future occurrences of such fatal accidents. He also urged the state to immortalize the late athletes in recognition of their service to the state and the nation.

In a related message, Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, also conveyed his condolences, describing the incident as painful and a devastating blow to the sports community and the country at large.

“These young athletes dedicated themselves to the pursuit of sporting excellence and the betterment of Nigeria,” Kalu said. “Their efforts and contributions will never be forgotten.”

The Deputy Speaker extended his sympathies to the families of the deceased, the Kano State Government, the National Sports Commission, and all sports enthusiasts across the country. He prayed for strength and comfort for those affected by the tragedy.
