2027 Race Not Exclusive to Old Contenders – Ex-Minister

Abuja, NigeriaFormer Minister of Education and one-time Nigerian ambassador to Germany, Professor Tunde Adeniran, has debunked claims that the 2027 presidential race is reserved solely for recurring political figures. He encouraged Nigerian youth to take an active role in shaping the country’s political future, stressing that their participation is vital to securing their destiny.

Professor Adeniran cited the example of Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who has expressed interest in running again, as proof that the political space is not closed to newer, younger aspirants.

“The notion that the same old faces must dominate our elections is flawed,” he stated. “Young Nigerians must rise to the occasion. Their indifference could cost them the opportunity to define their own future.”

However, Adeniran also noted that Adebayo, like many concerned Nigerians, appears to be more invested in the advocacy for a new constitution than immediate campaign efforts. He emphasized that structural reform remains central to Nigeria’s political renewal.

Beyond electoral ambitions, the former minister criticized the increasing wave of defections within the country’s political system. According to him, the frequent switching of party loyalties undermines democratic integrity and reveals a lack of ideological depth among many politicians.

“These defections mock the essence of democratic choice,” he argued. “They expose a concerning absence of shared values and ideological commitment across party lines.”

He stressed that many of these moves are driven by self-interest rather than a genuine desire to serve the public. “The trend shows that for some politicians, political affiliation is merely a tool for acquiring power, not a platform for public service,” he said.

Adeniran concluded by warning that the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on cultivating a political culture rooted in principle, not personal gain. He reiterated that for democracy to thrive, there must be a new generation of leaders driven by purpose and guided by the will to serve.
