Mariga, Niger StateAt least thirteen people have been confirmed dead following a violent attack by suspected bandits on Tuesday night in several communities within Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

The coordinated assault occurred in the towns of Magoro, Kumbashi, and Bangi—the administrative center of the LGA—where heavily armed gunmen reportedly arrived in large numbers, riding over 150 motorcycles and wielding advanced weapons.

Among the victims were a police officer and three local vigilantes who had been stationed to help safeguard the communities. Residents were caught off-guard as the attackers opened fire indiscriminately, leaving dozens injured and several homes devastated.

Sources indicate that the assailants moved swiftly from one community to another, spreading panic as they launched their assault under the cover of nightfall.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of Mariga Local Government, Alhaji Abbas Kasuwa Garba, stated that although the full number of casualties was still being verified, the situation has thrown the entire area into deep unrest.

He added that residents are living in fear, as the bandits continue to pose a threat, reportedly targeting nearby settlements in follow-up raids.

As of the time of filing this report, security forces have yet to issue an official statement on the attack, and the state government is expected to respond in the coming hours.
