10 Dead, 3 Injured in Herder-Farmer Clash in Oyo, Says NEMA

Ten people were killed and three others injured following a violent clash between herders and farmers in the Gbenpakan community of Saki West Local Government Area, Oyo State.

The South-West Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Kadiri Olanrewaju, disclosed the casualties during a briefing in Ibadan, the state capital. The briefing followed an on-the-spot assessment conducted in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to evaluate the impact of the conflict on the community.

Mr. Olanrewaju confirmed that the clash occurred on August 27, 2024, and resulted in injuries to three individuals who are currently receiving medical treatment. According to reports available to NEMA, the conflict arose from disputes over land use, with farmers accusing herders of grazing on their farmland without permission.

Olanrewaju stated that relief materials would be distributed to the victims of the clash on Sunday, September 15, 2024, by NEMA in coordination with the state government and local authorities.

Expressing sympathy for the affected community, Olanrewaju urged farmers and herders to coexist peacefully, emphasizing that organized animal rearing practices could help prevent future conflicts.

Saki West LGA Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Akinola, who received the NEMA and SEMA teams, provided further insight into the causes of the conflict, noting that he had convened a peace meeting with the aggrieved parties to help ease the tensions.
