Abuja, Nigeria — A tragic accident involving a Coca-Cola beverage truck has claimed the life of one individual and left two others hospitalized near the Nyanya Bridge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), authorities have confirmed.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), in a statement released by its acting Director-General, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the incident occurred around 6:30 pm when the truck reportedly suffered brake failure. The out-of-control vehicle crashed into several cars before colliding with a construction truck.
According to Mohammed, the victims — all members of the same family — were standing by the roadside when the truck veered off its path and hit them. One young man died at the scene, and his remains have been handed over to his family by the FCT Police Command in coordination with FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team. Two of the four victims are currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja and are reportedly responding well.
Both truck drivers involved in the incident were unharmed, and a female customs officer, whose vehicle was crushed in the crash, also escaped injury.
Emergency response teams from FEMD, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the FCT Police Command promptly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations.
Engr. Mohammed used the occasion to caution motorists on the importance of vehicle maintenance, stressing that poor vehicular conditions can lead to fatal outcomes. He also urged residents to report emergencies through the toll-free number 112.
The incident has reignited public concerns over road safety, with authorities reiterating the need for stricter compliance with vehicle inspection and maintenance regulations.
